How many characters do you really need?
Five.
You can have more, or less, but five’s about right.
One Protagonist. One Antagonist. Three supporting characters.
This is just a rough rule of thumb — not an exact science.
You need just exactly however many characters you need.
Which probably makes the title of this post a little misleading.
