I understand in my way. It still counts and fuck that lot. I’m trying to write my past and abuse into fiction and it’s not easy to embrace beyond the fanciful re writes of characters (protagonist) that are better, stronger, funnier than I was. When I have to writer the antagonist in, I lose all nerve, who wants to make this any more real than a ghost from another life? All my respect to your effort and continuation
“You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.” ― Anne Lamott.
At the risk of being inappropriate, I have to remind you of what Samuel Clemens had to say about truth: "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't." Maybe that's not appropriate here; sorry.
I would like to think that you would have gotten a different reaction had you presented your story as true. But people can suck sometimes so you never know. I'm sorry for what they did to you.
Here's something that might make you smile. I got an Associate of Arts degree in journalism (an A.A., a two-year degree). When I transferred to a four-year university, had I gotten the four-year degree, it would have been a Bachelor of Science, or a B.S. 😀

Take care.
I like the Samuel Clemens quote. Congratulations on your BS... wait, you know what I mean!
I didn't actually get the degree, but thanks. 🙂 Long, long story.
